I have an idea that I think would turn out to be a very useful product. I am unsure of how to proceed. Do I first contact a patent attorney or due I start by having/making a prototype?

I would file a provisional patent. If it is of a utility design... If it is just a gimmick or something of that nature a patent may not be required... The provisional patent will give you a year of protection and time to create and find out if it is going to be a money making opportunity.. Provisional patents cost around $100. Or you could make your prototype first, then file for protection.. But keep it secret till then. Laws in patenting are strict if it's used in public or published anywhere... Keep asking questions and keep us informed... good luck

is it a good idea to write manufactures about your ides(with a prototype)in hopes they will like and manufacture it? and if so how do you find the major manufactures? can you send your idea to several at a time?

No. It's not! Why should they deal with you after you just sent them a letter explaining your idea. They don't need you. They can just take it and manufacturer it without you. You don't even have a product. An idea is not an invention. You must create it, then protect it. Then you can write manufacturers.

Indeed, I would first create it and then protect it. Then you can write to manufacturers or advertise your patent on the Internet (your own website or free websites such as http://www.freepatentauction.com).

Great! Now your on the right track! Yes, then you can write whomever or whatever even advertise on the internet or use your own website. There is a chapter in the Inventors Guidebook (home page of this website) that talks about using CAD... Computer Aided Drawings on personal websites to show to investors, manufacturers or just for personal sales... Good luck and let us know when you finish so we can visit your site...

Sure, the Thomas Register is the best place to start.. Look under manufacturers for electronics.. Call the free 1-800 numbers.. I do not know how complicted your idea is.. but could you take apart old radios, TVs, etc. and use those parts? Here is the Thomas Register website address: http://www.thomasnet.com Also do a google search for electronic parts.. Let me know how you do..........

I have had a couple electronic idea's unfortunately they have failed. I would definitely recommend taking an online electronics course or reading through some basic electronic books to get your bearings around a circuit board. I am to paranoid to share my work with anyone so I will keep trying until I get the result I want or it becomes obvious that my idea is not going to work.

      Hi Victor,

I've gotten as far as marketing a product, but I am a little inexperienced in this field. Would you care to see a hard copy of my marketing literature and let me know what you think? Thanks Vic

I'm glad that I found your website. I was hoping that you can help me with a couple of questions. I live in Ocala, Florida and I'm searching for an Engineer that is skilled in Auto CAD and Pro CAD. Can you recommend one?

      Thanks,

Hey Mark, I am glad you found this website too. I will try to help in anyway I can... I recommend you go to your local university or college and find a student who is working on thier degree in autoCAD.. Get them to help you... They will do it for free, for credits in thier class.. or a small payment... If this doesn't work, let me know and I will research this for you.... Victor
